Volunteers Needed - SWE Region H Judges for Outstanding Collegiate Section / Outstanding New Collegiate Section (OCS/ONCS) Awards

To: All members of Region H- if you are interested in volunteering to judge collegiate section competition please review and respond by June 1.

We are quickly approaching the deadline for Outstanding Collegiate Section/Outstanding New Collegiate Section (OCS/ONCS) awards. In order to make this a success, we are seeking judges for this competition. 

 
What's required of judges:
-SWE professional member (ability to login to SWE communities, we can work on this together)
-At most scoring 10 entries (from one category - small, medium, large student sectio
n
-Provide feedback on the report (best event/category and areas that need improvement/more)
-Entries will be handled completely electronically
-Timeframe (Receive entries to judge mid-June - Return scored entries mid-July, time/entry ~1.5 - 2 hrs) 

Ideally would like to have 4-5 judges are needed for each entry, a mix of experienced (including National officers, past SAC chair, CIC chair), and inexperienced judges is preferred. We would also like to have judges from each Region.

If you are able to commit to judging between 5 to 10 award packets between mid-June and mid-July, please reply to this email or send a response to ocs-oncs@swe.org and fill out the attached excel spreadsheet (columns A-F only). Please respond by June 1st.

The Washington Post - Study: There May Not Be a Shortage of American STEM Graduates After All

As we listen to the political debate regarding immigration policy, there are ramifications to those of us who work in STEM professions, as discussed in this article.  Clearly, employers in the US should pay the same salary for employees (STEM or otherwise), regardless of nationality.  Globalization and pricing of fair wages is not just an issue between countries with different standards of living, but it is also happening within our own country.  Diversity is critical, but so is maintaining a level playing field where no one is financially discriminated against because of their nationality.

Location: Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital, 3601 W. 13 Mile Road, Royal Oak, MI 48073.  A map will be sent to those who RSVP.
Cost: $5 for SWE members, $10 for non-members, $3 for students over age of 12.  No children under 12.

Come see engineers and medical devices in action during our tour of Beaumont Hospital!  We will tour a standard Operating Room, the hybrid operating room of the Suzanne and Herbert Tyner Center for Cardiovascular Interventions, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and the Pediatrics Unit.

Light refreshments will be served.  Photos of equipment will be allowed.  Please do not take photos of patients or staff.  Please wear flat, closed-toe shoes.  Please do not wear skirts or dresses, as we will need to wear jumpsuits for a portion of the tour.

Casual note on patient privacy: If there is an encounter with someone you know during our tour, please respect the patient's privacy and do not approach them or discuss their hospital stay/visit with them during the tour.

The award winning SWE-Detroit (SWE-D) Professional Development Conference continues its success and is one of SWE-D’s signature events.
