Volunteer Mentors Needed for ESD Future City Competition

The Michigan Regional Future City Competition is not just another school requirement. It goes beyond the classroom to inspire 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and nurture their interest in math, science, engineering and technology.

Volunteer mentors are an integral part of this rewarding and hands-on experience. Students learn how engineers turn ideas into reality and apply their knowledge to real world situations.

As a mentor, giving a few hours of your time could mean a lifelong interest and even commitment to core academic subjects. Throughout the Future City Competition, engineer mentors work with student teams as they design and build their city of the future. Your commitment entails:
1.    Spending 1-2 hours every week or every other week with your team (via phone or in-person).
2.    Sharing your technical expertise with participants- (Mentors must have a technical background sufficient to understand the project and coach the team).
3.    Working with your students to help them harness their enthusiasm and channel their ideas into a coherent city.

The actual Future City Competition is in February 2016 but the students work on it for months beforehand and need your guiding mentorship.  The Engineering Society of Detroit matches engineers with school teams. Interested engineers can volunteer through SWE by contacting Anne Dancy, VP of Outreach, at anne.dancy@fcagroup.com.  For more information, visit http://futurecity.org/getinvolved.

LSWE Success

A letter from the President of the SWE University of Michigan Chapter, please read..

SWE members at the University of Michigan are raising money to pay for four Liberian students to come to the United States both to visit us in Ann Arbor as well as attend the WE15 conference.

The students were imperative in the start-up of LSWE, the first international student SWE affiliate chapter in Africa. I am truly inspired at the rate that the students are progressing and the passion and drive they are demonstrating as they work to follow the mission of the Society of Women Engineers.

Attending WE15 is vital for the Liberian students as they continue to learn about the impact of our professional society and the ways in which they can make a difference in their own communities. The students were accepted to present at the conference and their voices are crucial in SWE's continual growth in international activism and any progression we may make in targeting international students.

I ask that you pass along this message to the members of SWE Detroit and any other friends of SWE that may be interested in supporting our mission as we continue to aspire, advance and achieve together.

Regards,

Jackie Close
