Review of "Sally Ride: America’s First Woman in
Space" by Lynn Sherr
Review by Michele Marion
I chose this book because, while I knew that Sally Ride was
the first American woman in space, I knew very little else about her. What I
found out was that Ride was not only a pioneer for women in science who earned
a doctorate in physics at a time when most women went to college to find a
spouse, but she had also gone on to work for NASA and later established Sally
Ride Science, a non-profit working to inspire young people in science,
technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and to promote STEM literacy. Ride was
also an intensely private person and very little was known about her private
life before her passing in 2012. Lynn Sherr, however, gives us a unique
perspective into one of the most brilliant scientific minds of our time through
personal interviews with Ride's family and friends. I, therefore, highly
recommend this book as a view into the life of an amazing woman who overcame
unimaginable obstacles and will continue to inspire us for years to come.
