Her bio is below:

Frenae Smith is a graduate of Wayne State University and has a BS in Chemical Engineering and Material Science and an MS in Chemical Engineering and Project Management.  She is employed at DTE Energy in Detroit, MI, where she is a subject matter expert in Fuels Quality and a Principle Supervisor in Codes and Standards.  In August of 2009, she led her Laboratory in becoming the first energy lab in the United States to receive The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) ISO 17025.

Frenae's success can be attributed to her involvement in the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) as a pre-college student in the 1990's.

She served a two-year term as the NSBE Detroit Alumni Extension Chair and Regional Chair.  Today, Frenae functions as the Alumni Advisor for Wayne State's NSBE Chapter.  In ESD, Frenae is a past Affiliate Council Secretary, a member of the Young Engineers' Council, a Future City Judge, and recently a table captain for the ESD Annual Fundraising Breakfast.  She also belongs to other organizations such as the American Gas Association, Midwest Energy Association, SWE-Detroit, DTE Energy's Emerging Leaders Network and the Women's Leadership Forum.  She helps mentor and foster the growth of young Girl Scouts in southeastern Michigan, acting as a motivational speaker and helping with science badging.  Frenae is active with the United Way and Junior Achievement Job Shadowing Program, where she coordinates approx. 75 teenagers a year at an on-site career day at DTE Energy.  She was recently awarded the Southeastern Michigan Quiet Hero Award at the 15th Annual Ford Freedom Awards on May 10 for her continued work with encouraging underrepresented minorities to pursue STEM education.

Her future plans include earning her Professional Engineering license and a doctoral degree from Wayne State in the Global Executive Track Program in Industrial Engineering.

Frenae believes that God has given her a life that is a working model in progress.  She strives to live by the words of Malcolm X: "Education is your passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today."
