The Motor City Maker Faire is an annual DIY tech and crafting festival at the Henry Ford, now in its fourth year. The exhibits range from goofy to useful: from a life-size game of Mousetrap, to do-it-yourself 3D prototyping - but either way there's a lot of science and engineering in evidence, and a great opportunity for SWE outreach. Last year's SWE booth was a great success with lots of interest from kids, parents, and teachers. Everyone had a great time making slime! We're looking for volunteers to help again this year in the following areas:
Event Day Booth Volunteers: We are currently seeking volunteers to stay with the booth, explain and run science activities, and talk to kids (and their parents and teachers) about engineering. We will again be running a scavenger hunt through the Henry Ford, and offering a reprise of last year's popular slime-making activity. We're also partnering with the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), who will have an adjacent booth. Volunteers who work a three-hour shift will receive a wristband for free one-day admission to the Faire. To sign up, send (1) your name, (2) your cell phone number, and (3) your available times to swemakerfaire@gmail.com. Based on the response, we will work to coordinate the volunteer schedule so that we get good coverage of the booth during the busiest times.
Booth Co-Coordinator: If you're willing to spend a full day helping out at the Faire, we could use a volunteer co-coordinator to help distribute wristbands and make sure that volunteers find our booth and receive orientation. If you're interested in getting more involved with the Maker Faire in future years, this is your gig! This could be either Saturday or Sunday.
Programming Volunteers: Got ideas? Interested in developing exhibits and activities for Maker Faire? Based on last year's interest, we are working on some materials especially for parents and teachers this year, and it'd be great to get a group of interested people together during the year to brainstorm how we can make SWE's presence bigger and better in 2014.
Finally, if you're an electronics or mechanical hobbyist, and you have something you've made that you'd like to show off under SWE's banner, please contact me!
Contact Ashley Prescott at swemakerfaire@gmail.com and let her know how you'd like to get involved!
