"Reinventing Community through Adaptive Use”
Presenter: Elisabeth Knibbe, FAIA, LEED AP
Because technology and
society change faster than our built environment, repurposing old buildings for
new occupants is a sustainable option. Adaptive use helps to conserve
land and construction materials, reduce urban sprawl, and preserve history.
In this presentation,
you will see how historic buildings in Detroit, Lansing, Jackson, and Ypsilanti
have been transformed from seemingly hopeless buildings into valuable community
assets. You will learn how architects envision the often hidden potential of
obsolete buildings, and how they assist the community and developers in
realizing that potential.
Lis Knibbe is an
architect with over 35 years experience adapting historic buildings for new
uses. Her projects have won numerous state and national awards for
historic preservation, and awards from the AIA Detroit and AIA Michigan.
