Discussing Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
Review of The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
Review by Beth Nunning
Would you open it?
Cecilia, while looking for a piece of the Berlin wall in the attic to show one of her daughters, finds an envelope addressed to her from her husband with instructions not to open until his death. She asks her husband about it when he calls from a business trip overseas. He instructs her not to open it. As she ponders whether or not to open it, he flies home immediately from his trip and she hears him looking for the letter in the attic.
This prompts her to open and read the letter, opening a Pandora’s Box of intersecting stories with other mothers undergoing their own struggles. The decision of whether or not to open the letter then seems like such a small choice compared to the decisions she must make now based on her knowledge of what the letter contained.
This book was a quick read and enjoyed by most of the book club.
