Region H Conference - February 26-28th, 2016

Come join your fellow region SWE members at the Region H Conference on February 16th to 18th, 2016 at University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

There will be opportunities for networking, professional development, and more.  Additionally 4-hour CEU session on Working Globally will be available on Friday from 1-5PM.

Membership Circle Updates

SWE-Detroit is updating and expanding the Membership Circles! The Membership Circles were introduced last year as a way for members to do more with other SWE members in the areas where they live and work. 

The updated circles are:

-Novi/Northville/Farmington Hills (lead: Katie Amelio)

-Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti/Plymouth (leads: Ava Kiblawi and Nina Abani)

-Lansing area

-Troy/Auburn Hills/Rochester (lead: Leslie Urff)

-Taylor/Livonia/Dearborn

 

A few things to know about the Membership Circles:

- Members are not automatically added to the circles based on their address, they must request to be added (see instructions below)

- The events can be anything from happy hour meet-ups to paint and pour events to yoga classes

- Anyone can email the circle and coordinate an event in their area, but we will have leads for each circle plan several events through the rest of FY16

- If you were a part of a circle that is not on the updated list, feel free to join one of the updated ones. Previous circles will not be removed, but we will no longer have leads planning events for them

If you would like to be a member of one of the circles, please email Ava Kiblawi at avakib@gmail.com and indicate which circle(s) you would like to join!

We will also need additional help planning events for these circles. If you are interested in planning an event or being a lead for one of the circles, please let Ava know!

 

Events for the updated circles will take place beginning in December or January. Look for notices in the SWE-Detroit blog/publicity emails/facebook/website for event information for any of the circles!

SWE-D Member Circle (FH/Novi/Livonia) - January 2016 Event

SWE-D Member Circle (FH/Novi/Livonia) - January 2016 Event 

Where: Joe Louis Arena, 19 Steve Yzerman Dr, Detroit, MI 48226  

When: Saturday January 23, 2016, 5 PM   

What: Volunteers will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets at the Detroit Red Wings game.  Tickets are sold starting when arena doors open to the public until the middle of the second intermission.   A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to Forgotten Harvest!  Volunteers will be given standing room wristbands to stay for the game after the raffle concludes. 
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.

Volunteers Needed to present at Career Faire

WILL YOU SHARE YOUR CAREER EXPERIENCES WITH CHS STUDENTS?

Everybody has a story about how they ended up in their current profession. We want Clarkston High School students to hear yours! Are you in the position you always dreamed of? Or did your career journey lead you in a totally different direction? 

WHAT

Please accept this invitation from the CHS PTSA to participate in Career Day, a program planned specifically for 11th-grade students. The program is intended to help juniors explore career options as they prepare for senior class scheduling and college entry. Our goal is for the students to interact personally with professionals in a wide variety of careers to learn about what it takes to prepare for and be successful in those professions.  

WHEN 

Career Day is scheduled over two days to give more than 600 juniors an opportunity to interact with different professionals within specific career pathways. It's being offered on these dates and times:

•   Tuesday, January 12, 2016        _____7:10 a.m. to 10:35 a.m.               _____10:40 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. 

•   Tuesday, February 23, 2016        _____7:10 a.m. to 10:35 a.m.               _____10:40 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. 

Speakers may participate at one scheduled time, all day or both days. Light refreshments and lunch are provided both days. 

FORMAT

Three speakers are scheduled from specific career pathways to speak to three separate groups of students within an allotted time slot. (Students change rooms every hour.) Each speaker is asked to prepare an 8-10 minute presentation describing:

1.       what it takes to perform your chosen career,

2.    the education (college degree/vocation/certification) you earned to enter your field and 

3.       how the choices you made in high school (or wish you had made) affected your future. What would you do differently?

A Q&A session will follow in which speakers might also be prepared for questions about:

•   Other careers you could pursue with your degree/vocation/certification

•   Salary range for your profession

•   How much high school REALLY prepared you for the real world

•   The amount of time your job allows for your family

•   What you like most/least about your job

•   Recommendations for entering your field

WHY

When students have these kinds of candid conversations with professionals like you, it helps them make meaningful connections between what they’re learning in school and the tools they’ll need to be successful in the workforce. Visual aids help them make those connections, too. Any hands-on activity or product that might give students a better view into your “world of work" is highly encouraged!

Volunteer Mentors Needed- Engineering SMArT Michigan

The Engineering SMArT Michigan program is a rigorous, hands-on science, math, architecture and technology (SMArT) project focused on the over-arching theme of “energy” and how it ties to engineering in everyday events. The program allows high school students to apply concepts to real-life solutions by working in teams with their teacher and engineer-mentors as they design energy-efficient homes.

Volunteer mentors are a critical element to the success of the program and are needed to help teach and coach in the classroom.  

The 15 week program gets underway in late January and finishes up at the competition, May 18, 2016. Energy Module Mentors are asked to teach a minimum of one class period per week for two weeks. Presentation Module Mentors are assigned to a school and asked to teach a minimum of one class period per week for eight weeks. Efforts will be made to schedule multiple Presentation Module mentors at each school in order to ensure at least one mentor is in the classroom each week. Mentors can volunteer for one or more schools.
