PD Event: "Reinventing Community through Adaptive Use”

Venue: American Concrete Institute
Address: 38800 Country Club Dr, Farmington Hills, MI 48331

Agenda:
6:30pm Networking and light refreshments
7:00pm Presentation: "Reinventing Community through Adaptive Use”

Presenter: Elisabeth Knibbe, FAIA, LEED AP

Because technology and society change faster than our built environment, repurposing old buildings for new occupants is a sustainable option.  Adaptive use helps to conserve land and construction materials, reduce urban sprawl, and preserve history.

In this presentation, you will see how historic buildings in Detroit, Lansing, Jackson, and Ypsilanti have been transformed from seemingly hopeless buildings into valuable community assets. You will learn how architects envision the often hidden potential of obsolete buildings, and how they assist the community and developers in realizing that potential.

Lis Knibbe is an architect with over 35 years experience adapting historic buildings for new uses.  Her projects have won numerous state and national awards for historic preservation, and awards from the AIA Detroit and AIA Michigan.

Book Review of In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume
Book Review by Beth Nunning

In the Unlikely Event tells fictional accounts of an unfathomable period of time in Elizabeth, NJ. In the early 1950’s, while the author was a teenager, three planes crashed in a three-month time span in that small town. The main character, Miri, is 15 and trying to be a normal teenager as her friends and family try to cope with the terrible series of events.

The stories of the characters become intertwined as they are all affected by the crashes. Miri and her mother see the first plane as it is going down. Miri’s best friend’s father is the town dentist responsible for identifying the victims by their dental records. All in all, the entire town is affected. Some lose loved ones or know someone who has lost a family member in one of the terrible crashes. Some people witness a crash and rush to rescue anyone they can.

As time passes, people leave the town to get away from potential danger and others rallied to get Newark airport closed (and succeeded for a while) to avoid further tragedy. The story is book ended by Miri returning to Elizabeth, NJ 35 years later and seeing people she knew as a young girl and shared something only those living there could.

This book was not was what I expected from an author I’d read as an adolescent. I didn’t know the plane crashes had happened, so it prompted me to read news articles about them. Overall, I thought the book was well-written and the stories tied together nicely, it was just different from the Judy Blume who wrote Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing.

Wayne State Speed Mentoring Event- Volunteer for SWE

Think “Speed Dating” but BETTER (and less awkward!!).

Looking for Volunteers for Speed Mentoring at Wayne State University at 5:30 pm on Thursday, March 3rd.

We have an exciting opportunity for you to participate in our third annual outreach/networking event that we like to callSpeed Mentoring. Modeled off of “Speed Dating”, students spend 3 minutes with each professional discussing anything from potential career paths to gaining perspective on balancing a successful career with life. Speed Mentoring is an invaluable opportunity for students to connect with a diverse group of women in technical fields. It is also a wonderful opportunity for you to connect with professionals who share your goals and aspirations while working together to empower the upcoming generation of women engineers!

The past two years were a huge success, and WSU received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both student participants and mentors. We would like to cordially invite you to attend this year’s event, which has been scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm on Thursday, March 3rd. A flyer is attached with more information.

This year, we will be including a booklet for our student participants with basic information about each mentor, including your name, degree(s) earned and major, where you went to school, and where you work now. We'd also love if you could provide us with a few quick sentences about your job responsibilities or a quote that you'd like to share with the students. All of this information can be provided to us by completing the Google form below.
