CNN Money - Wanted: More Women Coders at etsy

An interesting article talking about etsy, and its struggle to find female coders.

NYTimes - Why Gender Equality Stalled

This is an excellent article that discusses work-life balance.  This related graphic illustrates which countries have paid maternity leave; it is really eye-opening how much the US lags behind other countries in developing family-friendly work policy.

Volunteers Needed - SWE National Capitol Hill Day in Washington, DC

The SWE Government Relations and Public Policy (GRPP) Committee will once again be organizing a spring Congressional outreach day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.  This event, which will be held March 20-21, 2013, will increase awareness of the need for and the importance of increased diversity and inclusion in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce.
SWE is once again taking the lead in organizing this event, and to date, over 30 STEM and diversity organizations are co-sponsoring.  SWE’s 2013 Capitol Hill Day will begin promptly at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 (there is an optional lunch at Noon), and conclude by 5:00 PM on Thursday, March 21, 2013.  The meetings will be held at the Holiday Inn Washington-Capitol, and in meeting rooms on Capitol Hill.  This event is being made possible by a grant from the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation.

Volunteers Needed - SWE National Scholarship Judges

Help Dreams Come True: Sign up to Judge SWE Scholarship Applications

Professional Section Presidents, MAL President and SWE Counselors,

SWE typically receives close to 1500 applications. If you haven't had a chance to encourage your members to volunteer, please do so. Thanks!

Judges are a vital part of the Scholarship Program and SWE could not do it without your help. It is through dedicated members' generosity of judging scholarship applications that young women are fulfilling their dreams of becoming engineers and making significant contributions to society.

Last year SWE provided 198 scholarships valued at over $575,000.  It is that time of year again to help judge scholarship applications for upperclass and graduate students.

Many judges have stated it is a rewarding experience to judge scholarships for these talented, aspiring future women engineers.  The applications are inspiring and it is amazing to see a glimpse in to the world of these future engineers.

Judging will be open from March 1-21.  All judging will be done online; therefore, you can judge at your own pace and on your own schedule.  A webinar training will be offered in late February/early March.

Rally your fellow SWE professional members to help judge the upperclass and graduate student scholarship applications.  We look forward to having you participate, please sign up here.  Please contact scholarships@swe.org if you have any questions.

Event Reporting - ESD Future City Competition Recap and SWE Winner

The Future City Competition was held on January 28th at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.  Even though most schools in the area had snow days, the Future City Students braved the weather to bring their future city concept models to the competition.  SWE-Detroit had four volunteers attend the event to judge the cities, watch the top three schools present and observe the awards presentations.  We judged the future cities on criteria for our "Best Communication System Award".  Many of the future cities had advanced technology where citizens could communicate among each other with chips in their brains or tattoos on their arms.  Each city was creative in its own way and the students were very excited to explain how everything worked.

The winner of the Society of Women Engineers, Detroit Section Best Communication System Award was....<drum roll>....
Marvin L. Winans Academy of the Performing Arts, Detroit

Students names (L-R): Taria Topey, Rayna Hayward, Jabez Jones
Teacher: Ms. Suzanne Thebert
Mentor: Mr. Philip Gawel

More Future City Awards Winners can be found at their website: http://ww2.esd.org/EVENTS/FutureCity_Winners_2013.htm

A big thank you to all who came out to help judge and support the event!
