SWE 4 Life Endowed Scholarship Updates

Mid-Fiscal Year Update: SWE D-SWE 4 Life Endowed Scholarship Program

SWE 4 Life Fiscal Year 2018 Status: $1850 out of $2500 goal
Still need: ~$14,710 to meet final program goal of $25,000 for endowed scholarship.
#SWE4Life #EndofYearGiving

Can you believe the year is almost over? We are just over halfway to our goal for this year with the support from our section’s Life Members and friends! We received over $1800 which means we are on our way to getting our 2nd endowed scholarship and receive the full match from SWE D for our efforts! In addition to our fundraising efforts, we are ambitious and started two other endowed programs thanks to Pat Hillberg, husband to Life Member Josie Rewald. A third Endowed Scholarship program, Josie E. Rewald Memorial Scholarship, will be geared for those going into Community College first to pursue a Technical Field. It will be a first for the whole society and we have agreed to create the pilot. Finally, we are working on an endowed program to create a teacher/mentor award in honor of Josie Rewald and Lisa Perazza. We lost both of them during the Fall 2016 and both loved to mentor young women. Check out our separate blog posts on those endowed programs. After we complete these, perhaps something in honor of SWE’s 1999 Achievement Award Recipient and Detroit member whom we found out recently passed in Spring 2016, Dr. Shirley Schwartz. (If there are any volunteers out there to support, let us know.)

For those reading our blog for the first time, our SWE 4 Life Endowed Scholarship initiative targets our section’s Life Members to take the lead and build a legacy to support future female engineers through an endowed scholarship. The challenge to the Life members is to raise $2,500 each year for the next four (4) years to reach the $25,000 required for an endowed scholarship. To help encourage participation, SWE Detroit’s current officers agreed to match up to $2,500 each year to support the initiative. The endowed scholarship will provide an annual $1,000 scholarship to an aspiring and deserving women pursuing engineering. If the goal is met, the first scholarship would be awarded during the 70th Anniversary of SWE Detroit! SWE D’s Life Members would like the first scholarship to be given in honor of Josie E. Rewald.

If you know any of the SWE Detroit Life Members, please help us communicate to them. We have found that they, like many of you, are super busy and can miss the posts and emails. Some don’t even have an email. So if you see them at work or outside, please tell them what you have read on the blog.

Not a Life Member? No problem, anyone can donate to the fund (some have already). Every little bit helps, so we encourage you to donate if you can. Your donation is tax deductible.

The program will be tracked separately from the Member Solicitation Program and have its own levels:
Diamond $ 1000 +
Sapphire $   500 to $ 999
Emerald $   250 to $ 499
Quartz     $   50 to $ 249

Contributions will be tracked yearly and the level will be determined based on accumulated contributions received by SWE Detroit.

To donate online to any of our programs, go to www.swedetroit.org and look for the Donate Button on the site for Paypal.  After you submit your information and input your donation amount, you will have the opportunity to designate your donation. Please input in the text field to allow it to be allocated appropriately: “SWE 4 Life Endowed Scholarship or Life Members Endowed Scholarship”, “Josie E. Rewald Memorial Scholarship”, “Teacher/Mentor Award”, specify another program, or the general fund.

Josie E. Rewald Scholarship Updates

#EndofYearGiving: Consider Supporting Josie E. Rewald Memorial Scholarship - An Endowed Scholarship to Aid Women Pursuing Technology via Community College

Josie E. Rewald Memorial Scholarship Fiscal Year 2018 Status: ~$1590 out of $5000 goal
Still need: ~$16,820 to meet final program goal of $25,000 for endowed scholarship.

A huge “Thank you!” to the many individual supporters (see below). Special thanks to Dale Murrish from General Motors for helping us gain momentum in raising funds to support SWE’s first endowed scholarship for women pursuing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Career via community college!
We hope that you will consider this program or the other programs SWE Detroit has in your end of year giving.

For those of you reading about the Josie E. Rewald Memorial Scholarship for the first time, here is some background: in September 2016, our dear friend and SWE Life Member, Josie E. Rewald, passed away un-expectantly. Everyone who knew Josie is saddened by the passing of a wonderful leader and mentor in SWE Detroit and General Motors (GM). Josie was committed to excellence, and her record of accomplishment during her career was stellar. She was very interested in mentoring students and early career engineers, in particular women. She served as a mentor to many at GM and SWE Detroit, as well as those in and outside of her community.

SWE Detroit is honoring Josie and her commitment to engineering and to the education of aspiring engineers in four (4) different ways:
  • A one-time scholarship awarded in Spring 2017 comprised of donations from GM, SWE/GM volunteers, and friends & family of Josie
  • SWE 4 Life (Life Members) Endowed Scholarship Program
    • First award will be dedicated in honor of Josie at the 70th SWE Detroit Anniversary in 2022
    • This initiative lead by SWE D’s life members is in its second year (see the SWE 4 Life Blog Post for more information)
  • Josie E. Rewald Memorial Endowed Scholarship
    • Spun off the SWE 4 Life Endowed Scholarship with financial support from Pat Hillberg, Josie’s husband
    • Goal is to raise $25,000 in 1-2 years for an endowed scholarship for women entering a community college first to pursue a career in a technical field
      • First community college endowment & pilot for all of SWE
      • After one year of interest, the endowment would provide an annual $1,000 scholarship
  • Rewald/Perazza Teacher/Mentor Award
    • A middle school & high school teacher recognition for mentoring & encouraging girls to pursue a STEM career
    • Award to include STEM kits for the classroom
    • Program details including name are still in the works
Check back every two months to see our progress on the SWE Detroit Online Blog.

Separate from SWE Detroit’s Member Solicitation Program, the following categories created based on Josie’s favorite hiking trails* will be used to acknowledge the support of those who wish to contribute to the scholarship. The suggested donation amount is $200 each year to reach the $25,000 needed for an endowed scholarship. You may choose to make a single contribution or multiple contributions. We will send out reminders each year. Contributions will be tracked and your level will be determined based on accumulated contributions received by SWE Detroit.
  • Kalalau Trail $ 1000 +
  • Jackson Hole $ 750 to $ 999
  • Mount Roberts $ 500 to $ 749
  • Dog Mountain $ 250 to $ 499

Seeking Support from Members: Membership Solicitation

Throughout SWE Detroit’s 66 years, our membership has a history of women who were pioneers in their field. Today, we continue to have women who are making history. SWE strives to support the development of a skilled technical workforce; however, we find that women continue to be significantly underrepresented in engineering.  Therefore, the mission, core values, and objectives of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) are just as relevant today as they were over 66 years ago. As SWE adapts to the demands of a global environment, it continues to provide resources for the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women engineers. SWE also embraces diversity, realizing the value of contributions made by a diverse workforce.

As one of the largest grassroots sections in SWE, the Detroit Section is able to provide several programs to support its local members, as well as opportunities for future engineers to explore their potential career paths:
·          Professional development programs, such as the Professional Development Conference coming in Spring 2018
·          Networking activities, either with special-interest groups from highly active employers, or at technical and social family friendly meetings
·          Provide opportunities for elementary to middle school-aged girls to interact with female engineers and participate in activities/hands-on demonstrations to increase their exposure to science and technology careers through Girls Exploring Engineering (GEE)
·          Special Campaigns for 2018 being tracked separately (learn more about them on the SWE Detroit Blog or contact us):
o SWE 4 Life Endowed Scholarship
o Josie E. Rewald Memorial Endowed Scholarship
§The scholarship will be the first scholarship to be awarded to a student who is pursuing a STEM career via community college.
o Rewald/Perazza Teacher Recognition Endowed Program*
§ The program will recognize middle school & high school teachers/mentors for inspiring young ladies to go into engineering & technology and provide STEM kits for the classroom.
*Name not finalized

SWE-Detroit is using the following categories to acknowledge the backing and support of our members and friends.

                        Achieve             $150+
                        Advance            $50 to $149
                        Aspire                $20 to $49

In the memo section, you may designate a program. Please contact us via email at swe_detroit@swe.orgif you have further questions.  As SWE-Detroit’s programs and scholarships continue to grow, so does our need for your support.

Josie E Rewald Memorial Scholarship

Introducing the Josie E. Rewald Memorial Scholarship Campaign: An Endowed Scholarship to Aid Women Pursuing Technology via Community College

Josie E. Rewald Memorial Scholarship Fiscal Year 2018 Status: $0 out of $5000 goal

Still need: ~$20,000 to meet final program goal of $25,000 for endowed scholarship.

In September 2016, our dear friend and SWE Life Member, Josie E. Rewald, passed away un-expectantly. Everyone who knew Josie is saddened by the passing of a wonderful leader and mentor in SWE Detroit and at General Motors (GM). Josie was committed to excellence, and her record of accomplishment during her career was stellar. She was very interested in mentoring students and early career engineers, in particular women. She served as a mentor to many at GM and SWE Detroit, as well as those in and outside of her community.

SWE Detroit wants to honor Josie’s commitment to engineering and to the education of aspiring engineers. Our idea is to raise $25,000 in 1-2 years to create an endowed scholarship, the Josie E. Rewald Memorial Scholarship. After one year of interest, the endowment would provide an annual $1,000 scholarship to deserving young women entering a community college to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The scholarship would be a first for the Society and enable support to young women who may not be able to start their path into engineering directly via a university or college.  To make our goal a reality in a short amount of time, Pat Hillberg, Josie’s husband, has seeded our efforts with $5,000 and has agreed to match up to $10,000 additional for the scholarship. Thus making our goal to raise $10,000 over the next 2 years.  To see our status, check out our updates on the SWE Detroit Online Blog (http://swedetroit.blogspot.com/).

SWE Detroit would select the candidates with our local process and SWE Headquarters would support administration by validating our recipient(s) are entering programs which articulate into accredited institutions with an engineering program and sending the check to the school.

Mount Roberts $500 to $749
Dog Mountain $250 to $499
Highline Loop $50 to $249
*See information about the hiking trails and their significance to Josie & Pat in the images below.
