Collegiate Transition Lunch on 4/11:

On one of the first sunny days of the season, SWE-Detroit hosted the annual Collegiate Transition Lunch! 4 Professional members were able to meet with 8 collegiate members from Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, and Kettering University! Over lunch we talked about what it was like to be a professional member in SWE, great events the collegiate sections are hosting, and upcoming SWE conferences! We all had a fun time and are looking forward to seeing each other a future SWE events. This event was planned and hosted our College Relations chair, Emily Zumbrunnen.

Volunteers Needed: Maker Faire on July 25th & 26th At The Henry Ford

SAVE THE DATE:
Maker Faire
July 25th & 26th
At The Henry Ford in Dearborn, MI

What is Maker Faire? Well I’m glad you asked!  Maker Faire is an award winning, family friendly event celebrating technology, education, science, arts, crafts, engineering, food, sustainability, and more. Maker Faire has become part of pop-culture, a place for experiential marketing, debuting new technologies and inventions, and celebrating geekdom. Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement.  It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers.  They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.  http://www.makerfairedetroit.com/

Volunteering with SWE Detroit: Every year SWE Detroit hosts an activity at our booth at the fair.  In the past, we have done a bridge-building event that the kids just love!  If you are interested, there are two different options for ways you can volunteer with SWE Detroit:
(1) Planning:  Several volunteers are needed to help plan the event, build our project, and coordinate details.  The commitment would be ~2-3 meetings total and minimal email coordination in the months leading up to the event (meeting times TBD). We are also looking for an individual(s) who are interested in learning the role/responsibilities of the SWE Detroit lead for Maker Faire, for leadership succession planning for SWE’s participation at this special event.
(2) Day-of fair volunteers: Several volunteers needed throughout the day on both Saturday July 25th and Sunday July 26th to work the SWE booth and activity. Shift schedules TBD.

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please contact Anne Dancy at anne.dancy@fcagroup.com or 214-244-2875.

Past Presidents' Post

Building a Legacy: Final Year – Almost There!
Past Presidents Endowed Scholarship Status Update

Status: FY15 Goal - $2,860 out of $2500 – GOAL ACHIEVED!, Overall Goal – ~98% to target!
Still need: ~$560 (includes supporting administrative costs) to meet final program goal of $27,500 for endowed scholarship.

We have some EXCITING NEWS! We achieved our first fundraising goal and are very close to our stretch goal of $27,500 to support an endowed scholarship and the administrative costs at SWE Headquarters (HQ). We can still use those contributions! We will be starting the paperwork to submit for the endowed scholarship and the funds to SWE HQ. We will have exceeded the plan for the program and maybe able to submit before the end of FY15 thus providing the potential to award the 1st scholarship 1 year earlier than anticipated! We will confirm once the paper work is submitted as the funds need to earn interest for 1 fiscal year before it can be awarded. As a reminder, the HQ staff support includes verifying that the recipient is entering into an accredited University and sends the check to the University in the student’s name.

If you know any of the past SWE Detroit Presidents, please help us communicate to them. We have found that they, like many of you, are super busy and can miss the posts and emails. So if you see them at work or outside, please tell them what you have read on the blog. Not a past SWE D president? Don’t worry, anyone can donate to the fund even though our group of section past presidents have come together and taken the lead. Every little bit helps, so we encourage you to donate if you can. After this year, you can still designate funds for our endowment and we can put in a lump sum each year to grow it toward a higher scholarship value.

To donate online go to www.swedetroit.org and look for the Donate Button on the site for Paypal.  After you submit your information and input your donation amount, you will have the opportunity to designate your donation. Please input in the text field, “Past Presidents Endowed Scholarship or PP Scholarship” to allow it to be allocated appropriately.

To donate via check: mail the check to Society of Women Engineers – Detroit, PO Box 2978, Southfield, MI 48037 and place in the memo section “PP Scholarship”.
