Past Presidents' Post

Building a Legacy: Final Year – Almost There!
Past Presidents Endowed Scholarship Status Update

Status: FY15 Goal - $2,860 out of $2500 – GOAL ACHIEVED!, Overall Goal – ~98% to target!
Still need: ~$560 (includes supporting administrative costs) to meet final program goal of $27,500 for endowed scholarship.

We have some EXCITING NEWS! We achieved our first fundraising goal and are very close to our stretch goal of $27,500 to support an endowed scholarship and the administrative costs at SWE Headquarters (HQ). We can still use those contributions! We will be starting the paperwork to submit for the endowed scholarship and the funds to SWE HQ. We will have exceeded the plan for the program and maybe able to submit before the end of FY15 thus providing the potential to award the 1st scholarship 1 year earlier than anticipated! We will confirm once the paper work is submitted as the funds need to earn interest for 1 fiscal year before it can be awarded. As a reminder, the HQ staff support includes verifying that the recipient is entering into an accredited University and sends the check to the University in the student’s name.

If you know any of the past SWE Detroit Presidents, please help us communicate to them. We have found that they, like many of you, are super busy and can miss the posts and emails. So if you see them at work or outside, please tell them what you have read on the blog. Not a past SWE D president? Don’t worry, anyone can donate to the fund even though our group of section past presidents have come together and taken the lead. Every little bit helps, so we encourage you to donate if you can. After this year, you can still designate funds for our endowment and we can put in a lump sum each year to grow it toward a higher scholarship value.

To donate online go to www.swedetroit.org and look for the Donate Button on the site for Paypal.  After you submit your information and input your donation amount, you will have the opportunity to designate your donation. Please input in the text field, “Past Presidents Endowed Scholarship or PP Scholarship” to allow it to be allocated appropriately.

To donate via check: mail the check to Society of Women Engineers – Detroit, PO Box 2978, Southfield, MI 48037 and place in the memo section “PP Scholarship”.

Outreach: Volunteers Needed

For the 1st year ever, Rochester High School will be hosting a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) careers event for middle and high schoolers on Saturday, May 2. We are interested in establishing a presence at this event for SWE Detroit, and we are looking for a volunteer to lead this initiative.

There are two different options for ways you can volunteer:
(1) Individual Presenters who will engage students at an assigned table discussing their industry/career
(2) Workshop Presenters who will create and lead a 30-45 minute hands-on workshop for 30 or so students

The flyer below gives more details of the event and the volunteer opportunities.  If you are interested in coordinating this event for SWE Detroit or if you just want to volunteer with us, please contact me at anne.dancy@fcagroup.comor 214-244-2875.

Outreach Metric Tool

As a SWE member, you are part of an amazing and supportive group of individuals who make a difference in our local Detroit communities everyday through our hard work, service, and leadership.  Many of you have been a part of our local Outreach projects, like our most recent event GEE where we taught ~100 inner city Detroit girls about engineering and science through a full day of activities, experiments, and fun.  Furthermore, the national organization of SWE is able to host events like this and more all over the country to help engage and teach the next generation about our professions.  I wanted to share with you, some of the Outreach efforts of National SWE since the beginning of the year. So far there have been 128 outreach events serving 4852 girls and 1380 SWE Volunteers this year alone (and it’s only March!).  SWE Detroit’s outreach metrics are wrapped up into this summer, so know that YOU really do make a difference locally and nationally! Please see the attachment for the National SWE Outreach report.  And thanks for volunteering with right here in our home of Detroit!
