Detroit Maker Faire 2016 - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Hello Everyone!

SWE Detroit will be hosting a booth at this year's Maker Faire at the Henry Ford Museum on July 30-31st from 9:30AM to 6:00PM! The booth activity will be a bridge competition similar to last year. The activity will have participants create a bridge to hold the most weight. Individuals whose bridges can hold the most weight will have their name put up onto a score board for everyone to see as they walk by the booth. 

Volunteer time slots will be in 2 hours increments on either day. We will need to have at least two people at the booth at one time. This is to allow one person to handle the activity while the other could answer any questions about SWE that arise. Also, I am looking for one person would be willing to be the go to contact for one of the days. If you are interested in being this person or would like more information on what additional responsibilities there would be, please let me know.

Detroit Tigers with Lear - August 28th

Lear will be hosting SWE Detroit in their box for the Sunday August 28th Tigers vs. Angels Baseball Game!  Great opportunity to come watch the Tigers play and network with employees from Lear.

Review of Banker to the Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty by Muhammad Yunus

I first heard about Muhammad Yunus in a leadership course, in a video where he discussed his motivation for creating the micro-lending concept in his home country of Pakistan. The book is fascinating to read, as he discusses how he initially came up with the concept, and how it evolved into a worldwide organization that helps millions of people across dozens of countries. He opened my eyes as to how to effectively combat poverty, and to do so in a way that preserves the dignity of poor and helps them learn how to become financially independent. He also discusses throughout the book his focus on women, and why it is important to reach out to them. My only complaint with the book was that towards the end, he starts generating all kinds of side businesses from the basic micro-lending business, and it felt very "mega corporate" to me and that he was getting away from his original passion and core successful business.

Review of Polio: An American Story by David Oshinksy

I was motivated to select this book for our book club after hearing an interview with the author. Our mom contracted polio in October 1956 (her treatment was fully funded by March of Dimes), and this was the first time I have ever read anything in detail about the history of polio. It was fascinating to read about how it went from a sickness that no one understood anything about to developing a robust vaccine so that most of the world is now immune from it (at least the countries where the vaccine is widely available). It was disappointing to see the stereotypical fighting between egotistical academics of who would claim to make the most progress in polio research, and that they were frequently more concerned with self-promotion and publicity than helping out the general public who were affected by it. I also found it interesting to learn about the evolution of modern fundraising through the experience of the March of Dimes, and how charities take advantage of marketing and can lose sight of the big picture as much as any other organization.

2017 Region H Conference Advisory Team - Volunteers Needed!

Hi SWE-D Members!

The University of Michigan SWE Section is hosting the 2017 Region H Conference and they are looking for SWE members to help develop sessions and tours for the conference that would appeal to professionals.  SWE Detroit will be assembling an advisory team to help support U of M in planning these sessions and we need your help! The Advisory Team will consistent of professional members who can assist the U of M planning team by participating in the following:

·         May - July: biweekly to weekly meetings (can be virtual - Google Hangouts) with the sessions committee to update progress, gather feedback, etc. 

o   This is where a bulk of the work will be done - brainstorming and developing session topics

·         Sept - Oct: less frequent meetings - since the bulk of the work has been done, the rest is primarily logistics of coordinating with companies, speakers, and tours to finalize details

The responsibilities would be spread out among the members of the advisory team so you can participate at a level that fits with your schedule.  This is a great opportunity to support a local collegiate section and be part of the Region H Conference planning process!

Review of Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town By Jon Krakauer

Victims of sexual assault, unlike victims of any other crime, face unprecedented hurdles in convincing the public and the jury that a perpetrator of a horrific violence against them deserves to be punished in any way. The reports of rapes on college campuses being on the rise dominate the national headlines and yet nearly every case is met with its share of skepticism from the immediate community as well as the public at large. Has the victim done enough to prevent the unspeakable from happening? Did she (and most often it is ‘she’) simply regret consenting after the fact? Did she dress and behave in such a way that invited the attack? And

on and on.

As with his other work, Jon Krakauer is thorough in his quest to challenge deep-seated assumptions, erroneous beliefs, prejudices, and unjust partiality toward the perpetrator in cases of rape. The reader is led through several accounts of rape cases reported in Missoula, Montana, a very typical college town home

to a well-loved state university with a revered and treasured football team. Walking in the shoes of each of the victims makes for a difficult, hair-raising, disheartening, and, most importantly, eyeopening read. One after another the victims muster all remaining strength and willpower to report the crime to campus authorities or the police. One after another their accounts doubted, unfairly challenged, and their true motivations questioned. And one after another they are betrayed by their friends, community, and the justice system in favor of their assailants, charismatic and accomplished young men whose futures are bright but for the unfortunate accusations laid against them. 

Krakauer is relentless in taking every case to its eventual and usually less than satisfying end. But as weary as the reader may be to relive the near hopelessness of taking a rape case to trial (and most cases will never even reach this stage), no one is as weary, disappointed, and confused as the victim herself. “Missoula” is a desperately necessary book if we are to ever bring the scales of justice into balance with respect to the victims of sexual assault.

FREE Admission to Michigan Science Center to celebrate SWE!!

SWE has sponsored several very successful FIRST Robotics teams in the Detroit metroplex this year.  They have worked very hard to create complex  robots, and now it is time to celebrate their success!

Please join us at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit on Saturday May 7^th from 10am-6pm.  Admission is FREE to SWE members because we sponsored the robotics teams.  There will be a robotics presentation on the main stage before noon and a Taco Veloz Taco truck serving lunch! Attached is a flyer with all the good details!
